Materials included in the collection are audio visual materials, documentation from the Spivey Hall Ground Breaking Ceremony, building construction note book, site development documentation, and a digital copy of the book "A Unique Partnership: Walter and Emilie Spivey" (benifactors of Spivey Hall).

Biographical or Historical Information

Construction on Spivey Hall started in November of 1988 at a cost of $2.5 million dollars through a donation from the Walter and Emilie Spivey Foundation.  The concert hall was the inspiration of the local wealthy real estate developer couple. Emilie an avid lover of music as a nationally known organist. Mrs. Spivey was intimately involved in the planning of the concert hall, but by the time of the groundbreaking Walter had died and Emilie died shortly thereafter.  Spivey Hall was completed in 1991 at a total cost of $4.5 million dollars. At the centerpiece of Spivey Hall’s design is an Albert Schweitzer Memorial Organ, a 79-rank, 3-manual, 4,413-pipe organ.  This Fratelli Ruffatti built organ was the focus of a PBS special were it was noticed that the installation of the organ was overseen by Emily Spivey.  The concert hall seats 492 and presents jazz and classical music artist from around the world. Spivey Hall is also hot to the award-winning Spivey Hall Children’s Choir and Spivey Hall Young Artists.

Abstract

Spivey Hall is the internally acclaimed concert hall located on the Campus of Clayton State University.  The music hall was built in 1991 and host performances from world renowned classical and jazz artist.

Information on the planning, fundraising, and construction of Spivey Hall is provided in the University Relations Scrapook Collection in years 1987 to 1993.  The Presidents Collection: Dr. Harry S. Downs Collection also contactiosn documentation on the planning and construction activities for the concert hall as well. Dates within this collection and series that relate to Spivey Hall are from 1987 to 1994.
