The Clayton State University School of Technology began as Division of Technology in September of 1981. The name was changed to School of Technology in 1986. The primary function of the School of Technology is to provide quality technical programs in a variety of fields leading to initial employment and career advancement. The program started because members of the general advisory committee advised Clayton Junior College on current job needs, the relevance of programs being offered, and the development of one-year and five-year plans for vocational-technical education. When the School of Technology first came into fruition, it only offered 1-2 year programs in Aviation Administration, Data Processing, Electronics Technology, and Medical Laboratory Technology. The first Bachelor of Applied Science program was offered in 1997 with only 2 majors, Technology Management, and Administrative Management. In 2006, the School of Technology morphed into College of Professional Studies. Clayton Junior College provided an open house for the new programs. Newspaper articles reported that after graduation, students were finding jobs with high-salary rates, achieving the main goal for this program. The school now offers up to 31 programs at the baccalaureate, associate, and certificate level. This collection consists of notebooks, folders, CDs, cassettes, and programs related to the School of Technology. The items in this collection are dated from 1973 to 2005. The School of Technology items were donated to the Clayton State Archives by former Head of School of Technology, Dr. Benita Moore. In 1982, Clayton Junior College alumna, Benita became an instructor for Division of Technology. She was promoted from instructor to assistant professor in 1985. She eventually became Associate Dean of College of Professional Studies. She was a member of Women’s Forum, National Business Education Association, Delta Phi Epsilon, American Vocational Association, Association of Information Systems Professionals, and chapter advisor of Phi Beta Lambda. She was also a charter member of the Association’s Board of Directors. After serving 25 years at Clayton State, Benita retired in Spring of 2009.
