Biographical or Historical Information
The former Aviation Mechanics Program started in 1974 at Clayton Junior College. The program was a cooperation between Clayton Junior College and Georgia State University. Students were required to complete 45 quarter credit hours of the core curriculum at Clayton Junior College and 45 quarter credit hours to fulfill major field requirements at Georgia State University, but would earn a certificate from Clayton Jr. College.
From 1974 -1976 students who graduated in the aviation program earned a certificate, but by 1977 to 2006 gradutes in the program were able to earn a Science in Aviation Administration associates degree. The requirements for the degree required students to take major field professional courses at Georgia State, while taking a minimum of 20 quarter hours at Clayton Junior College.
In 1984 the aviation program was divided into a two year program offering an Applied Technology associates degree which prepared students for a career in aerospace vehicle maintenance, along with offering a FAA mechanic certificate. By 1986 more courses were added to the core requirements but aviation courses were still provided by Georgia State University. Then in 1987 under an Aviation Administration Degree Program an Aviation Maintenance Technology track, under the Technology Department, was offered which focused on Pre-Airway Sciencnes.
By 1990, there was no Aviation Administration Degree provided by the institution. From 1996 to 1997 Clayton State offered students cerificates in Aviation Maintenance Technology in the areas of Airway Science to experienced student who were unlicensed aircraft maintenance specialists, the concentration areas included Airframe Aviation Maintenance Technology and Power Plant Aviaiton Maintenance Technology. The entire aviation program came to an end in 2006.
